Wireless Hill Memorial
City of Melville, WA, Australia
2016
WINNER OF THE 2016 LIAWA AWARD FOR BEST SPECIAL FEATURE LANDSCAPE LIGHTING
This war memorial, known as 'The People', gives the people of Melville a space for reflection - a visible link between the past and the present. Nine panels are arranged in such a way, that when viewed from a certain aspect and distance, they depict a famous First World War panoramic photo. The north-west side captures the eerie silence of Australian troops making their way to battle. The south-east side features words laser-cut into rusted steel that form silhouettes of Australians in uniform, from World War I to the present day. The community provided the words, reflecting a modern day interpretation of the significance of war.
